Giant colony patterns exhibited by a pseudomonad.

چکیده
A bacterial colony on the surface of a solid medium is regarded as a grouping of cells arranged as a result of physical restrictions imposed by the surface of the medium. It is limited in size by the physical nature of, and changes occurring at, this surface (Knaysi, 1951). In a biological sense the bacterial colony is a macromorphological collection of cells rarely found in nature (Pringsheim, 1955). When a Pseudomonas species displayed several unusual colony patterns it appeared that the recording of this phenomenon, together with attempts to explain the factors responsible for the colony patterns, might contribute to the knowledge of bacterial macromorphology.

Comparative allostery of 3-deoxy-D-arabino-heptulosonate 7-phosphate synthetase as an indicator of taxonomic relatedness in pseudomonad genera.
Recently, an analysis of the enzymological patterning of L-tyrosine biosynthesis was shown to distinguish five taxonomic groupings among species currently named Pseudomonas, Xanthomonas, or Alcaligenes (Byng et al., J. Bacteriol. 144:247--257, 1980). These groupings paralleled with striking consistency those previously defined by ribosomal ribonucleic acid-deoxyribonucleic acid homology relatio...
متن کاملDispersal and group formation dynamics in a rare and endangered temperate 1 forest bat (
25 For elusive mammals like bats, colonization of new areas and colony formation are poorly 26 understood, as is their relationship with the genetic structure of populations. Understanding 27 dispersal and group formation behaviors is critical not only for a better comprehension of 28 mammalian social dynamics, but also for guiding conservation efforts of rare and endangered 29 species. Using n...
متن کاملRapidly Developing Yeast Microcolonies Differentiate in a Similar Way to Aging Giant Colonies
During their development and aging on solid substrates, yeast giant colonies produce ammonia, which acts as a quorum sensing molecule. Ammonia production is connected with alkalization of the surrounding medium and with extensive reprogramming of cell metabolism. In addition, ammonia signaling is important for both horizontal (colony centre versus colony margin) and vertical (upper versus lower...
متن کاملCharacterization of neutral amino acid transport in a marine pseudomonad.
The transport of neutral amino acids in marine pseudomonad B-16 (ATCC 19855) has been investigated. From patterns of competitive inhibition, mutant analysis, and kinetic data, two active transport systems with overlapping substrate specificities were distinguished and characterized. One system (DAG) served glycine, D-alanine, D-serine, and alpha-aminoisobutyric acid (AIB) and, to a lesser exten...
متن کاملGiant Cell Ependymoma of The Filum Terminale: A Case Report
Ependymomas accounts for about 2%–6% of CNS and 60%–70% of spinal cord tumors. Several histological patterns of these neoplasms are well known, but little attention has been devoted to a variant composed of giant cells. In spite of apparently “worrisome” histology, giant cell ependymoma seems to be a neoplasm with a relatively good prognosis. This report presents a case of giant cell ependym...
